Rivers State Assembly Suspends Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The decision to suspend the impeachment proceedings was taken on Thursday, February 19, 2026, during a plenary session in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers agreed to adopt a motion to stop further action on the matter.

The impeachment move was originally launched in early January when the Assembly accused the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct, including alleged extra-budgetary spending, demolition of the State Assembly complex and other claims.

However, the suspension comes after intervention by President Bola Tinubu and ongoing court injunctions which have left the process legally and politically stalled. Lawmakers said the motion was intended to calm political tensions and allow for legal disputes to play out without further escalation.

Governor Fubara and his deputy had earlier obtained interim court orders restraining key steps in the impeachment process, and the state Chief Judge also declined to constitute an investigative panel due to pending legal action.

The Assembly’s action effectively pauses the impeachment effort for now, even as the broader political dispute in the oil-producing state remains unresolved.
