Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents of the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding, despite the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Fubara emphasized that his administration has prioritized the protection of lives and property, ensured continuous progress, and remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law.

“We have prioritized the security of lives and property and advancing the well-being and prosperity of Rivers people,” Governor Fubara said.

“Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance has continued, salaries have been paid, and great projects are being executed to move the state forward.”

The governor expressed disappointment that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have frustrated their efforts to foster peace, unity, and stability in the state.

He assured residents that his administration will engage with relevant institutions to ensure democracy remains strong and the state continues to thrive.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State has been met with widespread criticism, with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemning the move as unconstitutional.

The NBA argued that the President’s actions are a clear violation of the Constitution, which does not grant him the power to remove elected officials under the guise of a state of emergency.

Governor Fubara’s call for calm comes as tensions remain high in the state, with residents advised to remain indoors and avoid any areas where military operations are ongoing.
