The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Thursday, joined other well-meaning Nigerians to call on the Federal Government to reverse the increase in electricity and petrol prices. The religious body said the hikes had added to the pains of the citizens.
This was disclosed by CAN President, Samson Ayokunle during the fourth quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, themed ‘Questioning for peace in the challenges of insecurity and COVID-19.’
“That (hike) is not what we sent them to do for us. The decision, evidently, has added to our pains and they should reverse it as quickly as possible,” he said while admitting that he backed the #EndSARS protest.
Ayokunle cautioned Nigerians against attributing the protest as having ethnic or religious base, stating no religious group was exempted from the movement.
The CAN President added: “As a man of God, I never saw the #EndSARS protest coming. Maybe I am far from God. It came to us all unawares. Initially, I thought that the protest was organised by bad boys in the society, but when I began to see and read stories of police brutality, I was surprised and supported their actions.
“But attributing the actions of the angry youths to a particular religion or ethnic group is insincere and unsafe. No religious group was exempted from the protest. The action was spontaneous that it cannot be attributed to any religion or ethnic group…”
