Report: Tinubu to name Shettima as running mate

Barring any last-minute change, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will announce Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 polls.

According to Vanguard newspaper, Tinubu settled for the former Borno State governor owing to the latter’s role in his campaign in the buildup to the APC presidential primary.

Shettima, who currently represents Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is an outspoken supporter of Tinubu and speaks highly of the ex-Lagos governor.

BlackBox Nigeria had reported that the APC flagbearer opted for a fellow Muslim as his running mate, despite calls by prominent bodies including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that a Muslim-Muslim ticket might fuel religious tensions in the country.

According to NAN, a source in the Tinubu Campaign Organisation confirmed that the APC National Leader will unveil his choice in the coming days.

“The vice-presidential nominee may most likely be a former governor and senator from the Northeast part of Nigeria,” the source was quoted to have said.

“The person is also by accident of birth a Muslim, confirming what Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said on Saturday that Tinubu had settled for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.”

On Friday, Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje disclosed that Tinubu has agreed to pick a Muslim vice-presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Tinubu is expected to visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina, on Sunday to discuss his VP pick.
