A group of young law graduates from Ikorodu Federal Constituency has received financial support to help them advance their legal careers, as the chairman, House committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson rolled out his annual law school support initiative on 27 February 2026.
In a ceremony held at his constituency secretariat, 42 beneficiaries, all Ikorodu-born or resident law graduates pursuing professional legal education were each given ₦200,000 to assist with expenses tied to attending the Nigerian Law School and moving toward being called to the Bar.
The gesture builds on an ongoing programme launched through Benson’s iCare Foundation, which in previous years awarded similar grants to Ikorodu law graduates to cover tuition, registration and other academic costs.
Addressing beneficiaries and their families, the Director-General of the iCare Foundation, Mayor Deen Sanwo-Ola, explained that the arrangement was born out of numerous requests from graduates facing financial strain as they prepared for professional training.
He said the structured programme ensures fairness and transparency in selecting beneficiaries.
Sanwo-Ola emphasised that the scholarship support comes from Benson’s personal resources, not public funds, and is intended as a long-term investment in human capital within the constituency.
“We identified a pattern where graduates need urgent financial help for tuition, accommodation, transport and other expenses related to law school,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the lawmaker, his wife, Mrs. Olajumoke Benson highlighted Benson’s deep understanding of the rigorous demands of legal training, noting his own background as a trained lawyer. She urged the recipients to excel academically and uphold professional ethics as they progress in their careers.
“As a legal practitioner, he knows how challenging professional legal education can be,” she said, encouraging scholars to remain disciplined and focused, and to “give back to the community” once they are established.
Several beneficiaries described the support as timely and impactful, saying the funds would help cover pressing costs as they prepare to enrol in law school.
“This contribution came at a crucial time and will go a long way in addressing expenses related to my professional training,” said one recipient.
Education stakeholders and local leaders present at the event lauded the effort, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of Ikorodu’s legal professionals.
