Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has issued a public apology for assaulting an Uber driver at his residence.
The incident, which was captured on video, showed Ikwechegh engaging in unacceptable behavior towards the driver, who had come to deliver a waybill.
In a statement released yesterday, Ikwechegh expressed “deep regret” for his actions, acknowledging that they fell short of the standards expected of a public official.
“I am truly sorry for my behavior, which caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation,” Ikwechegh said.
The lawmaker assured that he is cooperating fully with the Nigerian Police investigation and supports their efforts to ensure justice is served.
Ikwechegh also announced that he is seeking professional counseling to address underlying issues and will engage in community service initiatives promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for accountability and an end to VIP impunity in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Police have confirmed Ikwechegh’s arrest in connection with the assault.
