Relief as FG reveals plans to evacuate Nigerians trapped in Ukraine

Nigerians trapped in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine can now heave a sigh of relief after the Federal Government expressed readiness to evacuate them from the country.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with NTA, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama disclosed that the Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv has been contacted to arrange special flights for those wishing to return home from other areas including Donestk and Luhensk.

While assuring Nigerians that the ministry is following the event since the beginning, the minister added that the Federal Government would do everything for the safety of Nigerians in Ukraine, particularly students.

Recall that Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier sent a note of assurance to Nigerians in Ukraine, saying the Federal Government plans to evacuate its citizens who are willing to leave the conflict-ridden country as soon as the airports open.

Francisca K. Omayuli, the ministry’s spokesperson, in a statement on Thursday, noted that the Nigerian government was surprised by the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military.

He also disclosed that measures were being undertaken to keep Nigerians safe and facilitate the evacuation of those who wish to leave.
