Relief as APC ‘names’ Lawan in senatorial candidates’ list

It appears Senate President Ahmad Lawan has overcome the major stumbling block to his bid to return to the National Assembly.

Though Lawan didn’t partake in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary in Yobe North Senatorial District, he has been named the party’s candidate, as seen in a signed list of senatorial candidates under the platform of the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Bashir Machina, who won the primary, had vowed that he would not step down for the Senate President.

“I’m sure he did not plan to go back to the national assembly. That is why he contested for the presidency and lost. This is democracy. The space is free. A certain period of time was given for people to want to contest. Timetables were set, guidelines were produced by the parties, and eventually elections were held,” Machina said in an interview on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that Lawan had contested at the recently concluded presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite the pronouncement by the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu that he was the consensus candidate, the Senate President placed fourth in the primary after he managed to poll 152 votes.

The APC National Leader and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had emerged as the party’s presidential flagbearer with his 1,271 votes — after seven aspirants stepped down to back his candidacy.
