By “I Refused To Remove My Hijab To Change The Status-Quo” Firdaus Finally Speaks
Heated debates have since taken over the internet for the past few days after a Law graduate, Firdaus Amasa was denied procession at the recently Call to Bar event.
The popular Call to Bar ceremony is the last step of events at the Nigerian Law School. New Barristers and Solicitors are sworn in and certified to become Legal Practitioners, but just one lady was stopped last Thursday after she failed to remove her Hijab before mounting the podium. The ceremony is held annually at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
This singular act has since caused debate on the social media as they have been arguments for and against her action.
Speaking with TheCable in Abuja, the lady at the centre of discussion revealed that there are no rules preventing the use of Hijab and she intentionally wore hers on that day so as to change the status quo as others in the profession who have removed theirs at same point have done nothing to savage the situation.
She said, “Actually there are no rules preventing us from wearing hijabs. They just call it convention that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it.
“I used them. They complained [during] my first [law] dinner. That is how they do on every campus. You don’t wear hijab for dinner but I did. I chose Abuja because I know they were a little lenient.
“People have been removing their hijab over the years. What have those people who have removed it done?”
She added, “My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the Call to Bar ceremony.”
Reacting to this, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria has declared that it will write the Presidency and National Assembly over the matter and if the matter is not attended to, the body will have to take the issue to Court.
