Reactions After PayPal Freezes Accounts of Nigerians With Large Balances

Social media communities have been abuzz after reports emerged that PayPal appears to be freezing or disabling accounts of Nigerian users holding large funds, just days after the platform expanded its services to allow Nigerians to receive money locally through Paga, a Nigerian fintech platform.

Several users have complained online that their accounts, some with significant balances, were suddenly limited or disabled without clear explanation, prompting frustration and uncertainty.

These reports have triggered widespread debate across social media platforms, with many Nigerians accusing the company of inconsistent policies.

The development comes shortly after PayPal’s official return to Nigeria, enabled through a partnership with local payment company Paga, which allows users to receive funds directly and withdraw them in naira.

While some commentators urged caution noting that global payment services often place limits on accounts with unusual activity, many Nigerians expressed anger and disappointment, saying the actions undermine confidence in the platform’s reliability just as it became widely accessible.
