The Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was thrown into chaos on Monday as angry party members attacked the Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, at the party Secretariat in Acme, Ikeja.
The incident occurred when Ojelabi refused to accept the protesters’ demands to resolve the leadership crisis in Alimosho Local Government.
According to eyewitnesses, the protesters, comprising party members from Alimosho Local Government, converged on the Secretariat and confronted Ojelabi over his stance on the crisis.
They had requested that the party leadership recognize former public officeholders, including ex-lawmakers from the council, to address the challenges affecting peace and harmony in the party. However, Ojelabi insisted that current public officeholders must be involved in any meeting to discuss the issue.
The situation escalated when the protesters removed Ojelabi’s cap, a symbol of their displeasure, and attempted to physically attack him. However, timely intervention by security agencies at the Secretariat prevented further violence and ensured the chairman’s safety.
The leadership crisis in Alimosho Local Government has been ongoing for several months, with party members divided over the leadership of the council. The protesters had demanded that the party leadership recognize former public officeholders, including ex-lawmakers, to address the crisis.
However, Ojelabi’s insistence on involving current public officeholders has further divided the party.
