Private School Proprietors in Lagos Appeal To WAEC Over Examination Fees, Penalties
The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Lagos, Nigeria have appealed to the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) to temper justice with mercy in the introduction of penalties for students who were not able to meet up with payment of their registration fee.
In a statement made available to BlackBox Nigeria and addressed to the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, the body of Proprietors, called for the removal of penalty charges on the extension of 2022 WAEC registration to enable schools who have been caught in the web to upload their candidates before the deadline.
The statement further stated that the delay in adherence to the closing deadline was as a result of the current economic conditions in the country which has incapacitated parents to pay. It noted that parents were not prepared for increment hence proprietors are struggling to pay the examination fees on their behalf in order for the students’ dreams to be fulfilled.
“On behalf of the entire National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) LAGOS, I wish to humbly tender an appeal for the removal of penalty charges on extension of 2022 WAEC Registration to enable schools who have been caught in the web to upload their candidates before the deadline.
“Sir, it was so unfortunate that the delay in adherence to the closing date deadline was as a result of the following hiccups: that most of the candidates parents do not prepare for the increment in the fee this time around;
“Again, they (parents) even found it very difficult to pay the fee, hence proprietors are struggling to pay the examination fees on their behalf in order for the students’ dreams to be fulfilled,” it reads.
In a letter dated March 23, 2022, titled ‘WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (WASSCE) FOR SCHOOL CANDIDATES,2022:EXTENSION OF REGISTRATION’, the examination body stated that following the closure of entry on March 20, 2022, those who want to process late registration will have to pay a penalty of five thousand naira (N5000) per candidate.
“As we all know, normal entry closed at midnight on Sunday, 20th March 2022. However, late registration with a penalty of five thousand naira (#5000) only per candidate commenced on Monday, 21st March, 2022 and will run till midnight of Sunday, 3rd April, 2022.
“Those who have purchased pins but failed to upload will also be required to pay the penalty fee,” the statement signed by Dr. Adunala Osoba for the Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator of WAEC reads.
For the Proprietors who have been partners of WAEC, they are calling on the Zonal Coordinator to use his office to “salvage the whole situation to avoid the impending colossal psychological damage that could result on the part of the candidates, parents and in fact the school owners at large.”
