The Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to launch an immediate investigation into alleged threats against Seun Okinbaloye and other journalists.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the groups condemned remarks reportedly made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing them as dangerous and capable of undermining press freedom in the country.

The organisations urged the Federal Government to “promptly, thoroughly, transparently and effectively investigate the threat,” while also taking urgent steps to guarantee the safety of Okinbaloye and media practitioners across Nigeria.

The controversy stems from a comment attributed to Wike during a media chat in Abuja, where he reacted to remarks made by the Channels Television presenter on a political programme.

Wike was quoted as saying he would have “shot” the journalist if it were possible, a statement that has sparked widespread outrage within media and civil society circles.

Reacting, NGE and SERAP warned that such rhetoric contributes to a growing climate of intimidation against journalists, noting that press freedom in Nigeria is facing increasing threats.

They stressed that public officials must tolerate scrutiny and criticism as part of democratic governance.

“The threat against Mr Okinbaloye illustrates the escalating risks to the safety and security of journalists,” the statement noted, adding that freedom of expression remains a fundamental right that applies to all citizens, including media professionals.

The groups further expressed concern that failure by authorities to hold perpetrators accountable has emboldened attacks on journalists, thereby weakening democratic accountability and civic space.

They also reiterated that journalists play a critical role in holding power to account and informing the public, warning that any attempt to silence the media could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.

The call adds to growing pressure on the Federal Government to address concerns over press freedom and ensure the protection of journalists amid rising tensions in the political space.
