In a celebratory event held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, August 4, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu honored Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable achievement in winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

The team, under the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama, secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title by defeating Mali 78–64 in the final held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

In recognition of their outstanding performance, each player was awarded $100,000 cash prize, a national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), an apartment in the Renewed Hope Housing project.

Members of the coaching and technical crew received50,000 each, the OON honor, and a plot of land.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu at the event, commended the team’s resilience and dedication, stating that their success serves as an inspiration to the nation’s youth.

This recognition follows a similar gesture extended to the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national women’s football team, who were honored last week for their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

D’Tigress’s victory not only underscores Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball but also secures their qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
