President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their stunning triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they clinched their seventh continental title and an unprecedented fifth consecutive trophy.
In a thrilling final held Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, D’Tigress, led by Coach Rena Wakama, overcame Mali 78–64 to secure the win.
President Tinubu praised the team’s exceptional display of skill, resilience, and unity, noting that their performance brought immense pride to the nation.
“Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work,” the President said in a statement on Saturday.
He emphasized that by winning the title for a record fifth time in a row, D’Tigress have written their names into African sports history.
President Tinubu also commended Coach Wakama and the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their leadership and dedication.
He assured the team of the government’s full support ahead of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup next March and expressed eagerness to receive the victorious team in Abuja.
“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances,” he added.
