President Tinubu has expressed outrage following the Super Eagles’ inhumane treatment in Libya,
Urging the Confederation of African Football(CAF) to take necessary actions

After nearly 13 hours of being held hostage at the Libyan airport, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, have safely landed in Nigeria. The team’s return follows their decision to boycott the scheduled match against Libya in protest of the harrowing conditions they faced

The president expressed himself through a press statement released this evening by the President’s Special Adviser on information and strategy “The harrowing experience of the national football team at the hands of their hosts and the Libyan authorities prompted the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super
Eagles from the scheduled match on Tuesday.
President Tinubu expects the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation and recommend appropriate action against those who wilfully violated the organisation’s Statutes and Regulations”. The statement reads

President Tinubu expects the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to recommend appropriate action against those responsible for violating CAF’s Statutes and Regulations.

In a related development, the Confederation of African Footbal (CAF) has engaged with Libyan and Nigerian authorities following reports that the Super Eagles and their technical team were subjected to disturbing conditions at an airport where they were directed to land by Libyan authorities.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations” CAF stated.

Recall that the Nigerian Football Federation withdrew the Super Eagles from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, citing a 13-hour ordeal at Al Abraq International Airport.

The team’s chartered flight was diverted mid-flight to a smaller airport that lacked adequate facilities for their arrival. Upon landing, they encountered further challenges as the Libyan authorities failed to arrange transportation to their hotel in Benghazi, located three hours away. Despite efforts to secure alternate transport, logistical issues persisted.
