Police Halt Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement After Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has temporarily halted enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit, following a judicial order that temporarily stops the exercise.

On October 3, the federal high court sitting in Warri issued an interim order directing both the Nigeria police force and the Inspector General of police to halt the ban.

Following pressure from NBA and a different lawsuit from Olajide Abiodun, a lagos-based lawyer which was published exclusively by BlackBox Nigeria, the suspension was confirmed by SP Josephine Adeh, the Public Relations Officer for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in Abuja today.

Adeh told journalists during an interview today at AIT that the directive took effect once the police formally received the court mandate.

According to the court’s interim order, the police and the Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) must “maintain the status quo” and refrain from enforcing the tinted glass permit until the legal case is fully resolved.

During her remarks, SP Adeh emphasized that the tinted glass regulation was instituted on security grounds, citing instances where criminals use heavily tinted vehicles to evade identification.

She also denied that the policy was meant to generate revenue for the police, stating that all payments for the permits are channeled into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA).

For now, motorists across Nigeria need not worry about arrests or fines for tinted windows, at least until the court’s ruling concludes the matter. Enforcement has been put on hold nationwide.
