In a swift response, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command successfully thwarted an attempt to vandalize the Tipper Garage Police Post in Nyanya, Abuja. This came as hoodlums set ablaze a police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint.
The incident, which was initially misreported as the burning of the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters, was clarified by the FCT Police Command. According to the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the police division itself remained intact, and only the container compartment at the checkpoint was targeted.
During the attempted vandalism, four suspects were arrested. They were identified as Mathias Jude, 29, from Nyanya Area D; Mohammad Ahmed, 23; Abba Jibril, 18; and Mohammad Haruna, 18.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, strongly condemned the attacks on police infrastructure, stressing that the right to protest does not extend to the destruction of public property. He assured the public that those involved in such acts would be held accountable.
“The commissioner of police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, while acknowledging the right of residents to protest, frowns at the destruction of public or police infrastructure. Any violent protester arrested for destroying public property will face the full force of the law,” Adeh emphasized.
The police command’s decisive actions prevented further damage and highlighted the commitment to maintaining law and order. Authorities continue to urge residents to protest peacefully and respect public and private property, reinforcing that vandalism and violence will not be tolerated.
