The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has denied claims made by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) regarding the detention of Ayomide Adeleye, a murder suspect.
FIJ had alleged that Adeleye was not in prison and had never been remanded for the crime.
Responding to the report on X (formerly Twitter), SP Hundeyin clarified that the FIJ’s claims were incorrect and based on a mix-up. According to him, a different individual with a similar name, who was charged with an unrelated offense, had been released in April 2024.
He stated, “We can confirm that Ayomide Adeleye was charged with murder and was remanded for the same offence.
It is also a fact that another person bearing the same name was remanded for a different offence and released in April 2024, long before the Ayomide we are talking about committed his offence.
An outfit that prides itself on investigation should live up to its name. Relying on ‘sources’ rather than the spokesperson of the Correctional Service would land you in this kind of misinformation..”
Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, was arrested in September 2024 for the alleged murder of Christianah Idowu, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
In November 2024, Magistrate Seyi Omodara of the Ogba Magistrate Court issued a remand order for Adeleye, detaining him at Ikoyi Prison while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
FIJ’s recent headline, “Ayomide Adeleye Not in Prison, and Was Never Remanded for Murder,” has since drawn criticism from the police for its inaccuracy.
