Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has issued a public apology to subscribers after facing intense backlash over the sudden 200% increase in the price of its 15GB weekly data plan.

In a statement shared across its platforms, MTN acknowledged the frustration of its users, admitting that the move was a mistake. The message, written in a casual and remorseful tone, read in part:

“You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle… In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much.”

The apology comes after days of outrage from Nigerian subscribers, who took to social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), to express their dissatisfaction. MTN had increased the cost of its 15GB weekly plan from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, a move that shocked many customers.

The steep hike, which was implemented without prior notice, led to accusations of insensitivity and lack of transparency from the telecom provider.

Despite the apology, MTN has not indicated whether it will reduce the price or introduce a more affordable alternative. While some users welcomed the acknowledgment, many remained skeptical, with some demanding a full rollback of the tariff hike before they consider “forgiving and forgetting.”

The incident highlights the growing concerns over rising data and telecom costs in Nigeria, especially as internet access becomes increasingly essential for work, business, and education.

For now, customers are waiting to see whether MTN will back its apology with action—or if this is simply an attempt at damage control.
