A Nigerian photographer, Olawale Adeola Nesta has slammed foremost newspaper, Nigerian Tribune for using his intellectual property without proper credit.
Taking to his Twitter page on Tuesday, the displeased Nesta revealed that an image photographed by him was featured on the newspaper’s Monday edition but credit was given to one Yomi Ayeleso.
The image captured a queue at a fuel station in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital amid the worsening fuel scarcity in the country.
The photographer added that he contacted the said Ayeleso who claimed credit can’t be given to him (Nesta) because he doesn’t work with the Nigerian Tribune.
Nesta declared that he would take proper legal actions if the newspaper failed to give a response within 24 hours.
He wrote, “Dear @nigeriantribune this image was photographed by me, and credit was given to Yomi Ayeleso, I contacted him and he claimed credit can’t be given to me “the author” because I’m not a staff of Tribune.
“I need a response to this within 24hrs before I take proper legal actions.”

Reacting to the development, Nigerians have since berated Nigerian Tribune for the action which amounts to intellectual theft.
@CallMeBenfigo wrote: “One important thing to remember: whoever takes a photograph holds the copyright.”
@IamRidwanuLlahh said: “Omo o! This must be ment to be candid. Why use a picture he took since he’s not your staff? Don’t just tag Tribune, tag the guy that gave you this response if you know his handle. Very manipulative stuff.”
@iplanNg explained: “Copyright protects literary, music and artistic works. The author of the picture is the person who took the picture.
Only the author can determine who published or makes public use of the picture. The author does this by copyright assignment or license.”
