Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially parted ways with the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a new chapter in his political journey as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
Obi, who gained widespread support as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, confirmed the switch during a political gathering in Enugu on December 31, 2025. His move ends months of speculation about his political future following internal wrangling within the LP.
Speaking at the event, Obi said his decision was driven by a desire to align with a platform he believes is better positioned to unite Nigerians and provide credible leadership. “The time has come for a stronger and more focused opposition. ADC offers the kind of structure and vision needed to move Nigeria forward,” he said.
His defection is already sparking reactions across the political space, with many of his supporters expected to follow him to his new party. Political analysts say the move could reshape opposition dynamics ahead of 2027.
Obi also used the opportunity to call on like-minded politicians to join forces in building what he described as “a truly people-driven alternative” to the current administration.
