PDP Shrinks as Bayelsa Governor Resigns From Party

In a dramatic move that further accelerates defections from the Peoples Democratic Party, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially resigned his membership in the party.

The development was confirmed on October 15, 2025, through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabara.

According to state media and political watchers, Diri did not merely step away alone, he was joined by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, as well as key members of his State Executive Council in leaving the PDP.

Speaking at a State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, the governor acknowledged that his exit would invite speculation, but insisted the decision was deliberate and timely, aligned with what he described as evolving political dynamics in both the state and nation.

He thanked his supporters for their loyalty and affirmed his commitment to continuing his work for Bayelsa and Nigeria, though he stopped short of confirming the political party he would join next.

Though Diri left his next destination unspecified at the time, leaked reports suggest he may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level.

The exodus of a governor, lawmakers, and top aides represents a significant blow to the PDP in the South‑South, a region historically considered a stronghold for the opposition party.

Previously, Bayelsa and Rivers were among the few states still under PDP control in that region.

Nationally, Diri’s departure adds momentum to a wave of defections. It comes just days after Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu also exited the PDP.

Observers suggest these shifts may be driven by internal party crises and efforts by governors to align with the ruling federal party for political leverage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As of now, Diri’s political home remains unconfirmed, but parties across the spectrum will be watching closely.
