The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set February 4, 2023, as the date to conduct a fresh governorship primary election following the death of the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Abia State, Uchenna Ikonne.
This decision which was announced by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) is in line with Section 33 (1) of the 2022 Electoral Act which provides that a party must hold a fresh primary to replace its deceased governorship candidate within 14 days from the death of the candidate, as BlackBox Nigeria had earlier reported.
The NWC released a timetable indicating the series of events that were to take place sequel to the election of a new governorship candidate in the state.
According to the timetable, the sale of forms for the primary was to be carried out between 27 and 31 January, with the last day for submission of purchased forms slated to be on Wednesday, February 1.
Aspirants will then be screened on February 2, while the screening appeal will be held on February 3.
Finally, the primary election will take place on Saturday, February 4, at Umuahia Township Stadium.
The selected winner of the primary election will, therefore, represent the party in the 2023 governorship election slated for March.
