Panic In Ibadan As State Govt Shuts Down Company After 30 Staff Test Positive To COVID19
There is apprehension among the residents of Ibadan after the government announced that an unnamed company has been shut down after tests carried out on numerous staff returned positive to the dreadful coronavirus, COVID19.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State in his address on Saturday, May 16th, 2020 stated that the State recorded a total of 31 cases out of which 30 were from the same company. He then added that the company has been shut down and ready for decontamination.
BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the new update is currently causing panic among the residents of Ibadan, especially those within Ibadan South West Local government area, as that’s the location of the company that was sealed off.
Part of the address reads, “The COVID-19 confirmation tests for thirty-one suspected cases came back POSITIVE. Thirty of these cases are members of staff of the same organisation based in Ibadan South West Local Government Area. The organisation has been shut down and will be decontaminated.”
He continued, “We urge members of the public to remain calm as the situation is under control. Intensified contact tracing has already commenced. We will give an update on any additional measures that may need to be taken. The remaining one case is from Egbeda Local Government Area. So, the total number of confirmed cases in Oyo State as at 8 PM today, is 107.
Checks by BlackBox Nigeria revealed that the panic was caused as a result of the surge in the number of confirmed cases of COVID19 in a single day in the State as in the last 55days, only 76 cases have been reported.
The 31 new cases recorded in Oyo State is the second highest number of cases reported on Saturday as Lagos State had the highest with 95 cases out of the 176 new cases reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
As at late Saturday, Nigeria now has a total of 5,621 confirmed cases of COVID19, while 1,472 patients have recovered fully from the dreaded coronavirus, 176 fatalities have been recorded so far.
