The ancient Oyo Kingdom has ushered in a new era with the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the Alaafin of Oyo.
This pivotal decision, announced by Governor Seyi Makinde on Friday, follows a meticulous selection process led by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo.
According to Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Owoade’s selection underwent rigorous traditional divinations and extensive consultations, culminating in the governor’s endorsement. “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” Oyelade affirmed in a statement.
Prince Owoade is a distinguished Nigerian and Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a real estate investment and financial services business in Manitoba, Canada. His dual cultural and professional background is expected to bring a unique perspective to his reign.
The appointment resolves a protracted legal and social stalemate that began after the demise of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022. Ademola Ojo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, emphasized that this marks the end of a contentious chapter in Oyo’s history.
“The controversies that have lingered since the late Oba Adeyemi’s transition have been laid to rest. This is a moment of unity for the people of Oyo,” Ojo stated, urging citizens to rally around the new monarch.
With Owoade ascending the throne, expectations are high for a reign marked by peace, development, and the continuation of the Alaafin institution’s storied legacy.
