Outrage On Social Media As Kano Court Sentence Singer To Death By Hanging For Blasphemy
The Nigerian social media sphere has been agog with reactions following the judgment of a Sharia Court in Kano where a singer, Yahaya Shariff was sentenced to death by hanging for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
It was reported that the singer was arrested few weeks ago for a blasphemous track he composed and circulated on WhatsApp against the Islamic Prophet.
The judgement was passed by Judge Aliyu Kani of the Kano Upper Sharia Court on Monday after finding Shariff guilty as charged by Hisbah, a State owned security outfit mandated to enforce Sharia practices in the State.
Also, the judge sentenced one Umar Farouq to 10years imprisonment for a public derogatory statement against Allah. It was added that both convicts have 30days to appeal the judgment.
A public outrage has since followed the judgment as Nigerians are calling for the review of such laws where one can be sentenced to death for blasphemy against a Prophet of a religion.
