Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen played a decisive role as Galatasaray secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Liverpool F.C. in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in Istanbul.
Although he did not score, Osimhen’s attacking presence proved crucial early in the match at Rams Park. In the 7th minute, the Nigerian forward redirected a corner across goal, allowing Mario Lemina to head home the decisive goal that gave the Turkish champions the advantage.
The Super Eagles star constantly troubled Liverpool’s defence with his pace and physicality, helping Galatasaray maintain pressure in attack and forcing the English side to defend deep for long periods.
Osimhen nearly got his name on the scoresheet later in the game when he tapped the ball into an empty net, but the effort was ruled out for offside during the build-up.
Despite Liverpool dominating possession and creating several chances, Galatasaray’s defence backed by strong goalkeeping from Ugurcan Cakir held firm to secure the slim advantage ahead of the return leg.
The result gives Galatasaray a crucial lead going into the second leg at Anfield on March 18, where Osimhen and his teammates will aim to finish the job and book a place in the quarter-finals.
