Lagos State Government on Monday, June 5th banned all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Oshodi following incessant attacks by rival groups in the community.
The ban announcement was made by Commissioner for Transport, Mr Anofiu Elegushi during a press conference at the State Secretariate, Alausa, Ikeja.
Elegushi stated that while the ban lasts, there would be no issuance of tickets and collection of money from commercial vehicles operating in the area.
The Transport Commissioner revealed that the step was in line to curb the crisis that has since raised tension in the area following the death of a top member of the union, Rasaq Bello aka Hamburger who was killed on Monday, May 29th during the APC LGA Primary Election in the community.
He also revealed that the suspension order would remain in force till peace return to the area. In his brief, he stated that the ban action was taken after due consultation with major stakeholders.
The affected areas in this ban include, Oshodi A, Oshodi B, Oshodi C, Oshodi D, LOB A, LOB D and LOB J. He however disclosed that while the ban is on, officials of the State Government and security personnel would be strategically placed in and around affected areas to perfect operations of transport in the area.
