OPEC Secretary-General dies at 63

The Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo has died at the age of 63.

Barkindo’s demise was announced by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Mele Kyari, in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to Kyari, the OPEC scribe breathed his last at about 11p.m on Tuesday night.

It would be recalled that Barkindo, accompanied by a delegation from OPEC, had met President Muhammadu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja the same day.

Kyari tweeted, “We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11 pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community.

“Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.”

Barkindo was a former GMD of the NNPC. His tenure as OPEC Secretary-General ends on July 31, 2022.
