Grammy-winning Afrobeats singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has stirred controversy after declaring that the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is the only African artist who surpasses him in greatness.
The music star made the statement during a recent livestream session with Australian streamer, PlayboyMax.
“He [Fela Kuti] is the king. He is the only one [African artist] who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy confidently asserted.
His remark has triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with supporters praising his achievements and critics accusing him of self-aggrandizement.
Many argue that the continent’s musical legacy spans across generations of influential artistes whose contributions cannot be sidelined.
Though Burna Boy continues to maintain his spot as one of Africa’s most successful global exports, conversations around who deserves a place among the greatest African musicians in history remain far from settled.
