Actress Temi Otedola, daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola, has officially updated her Instagram surname to “Ajibade” following her 2025 wedding to Nigerian singer Mr Eazi and social media is on fire.
Their multi-city celebration from a lavish Yoruba ceremony in Dubai to an intimate church wedding in Iceland showcased glamour and culture.
But it was Temi’s decision to adopt her husband’s name that sparked a fresh wave of arguments over whether married women should change their surnames.
On X , reactions were split.
Feminist voices insisted it’s about choice, with @_joelad writing: “If she chose to take it, good for her. If she kept Otedola, still good. Any feminist wailing is doing too much.”
Others saw it as a sign of femininity, like @Mr_DaveChigozie who said: “That’s how feminine women move. Embrace your husband fully.”
Some took shots at critics.
King_Otega joked: “Poor man’s daughter go say she must keep her papa name o,”
While @NihinlolaOlowe argued: “Changing surname after marriage is Western culture, not African. Temi chose to change hers, respect women’s choices.”
During the wedding, Femi Otedola told his daughter to “succumb” to her husband, calling Mr Eazi “a very great guy from a decent family.”
His words, seen as either affectionate advice or traditional expectation, added more fuel to the fire.
For some, the surname switch symbolises unity; for others, it raises questions about identity and cultural norms.
One thing is clear, Nigerians aren’t done debating it anytime soon.
