Ondo women tackle Governor Akeredolu over Commissioner nominees
Barely 24 hours after he sent a list of 18 nominees to the state assembly, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has been criticised for being insensitive to gender equality. This accusation is premised on the fact that out of the 18 people on his list, only two are females, a development which has been described as unacceptable.
Some women under the aegis of Women Must Count have condemned the list stating categorically that Akeredolu intends marginalising the women. The women accused Governor Akeredolu of having total disregard to the yearnings of women and called for atleast 35% inclusion of women in the list.
The leader of the group, Mrs Olamide Falana in a statement said, “we express our displeasure and find unacceptable the recent list of Commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Akeredolu to the state House of Assembly for screening.”
Speaking further, she said “The said list shows a total disregard to the yearnings of the women of the state who hitherto had very high hope of a better representation in numbers in the leadership of the state especially with the new thinking the governor professed.”
The group wants the governor to follow the 35% principle in all appointments.
“We demand the 35 per cent affirmative action in all government appointments,” Mrs Olamide Falana added.
