Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has shared a surprising story from his personal life, revealing that he once sacked his own daughter from his establishment for repeatedly arriving late to work.

Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, the first daughter of former president Olusegun Obasanjo served as commissioner for health in Ogun state from 2003-2007 before she proceeded to the Red chamber in 2007 where she represented Ogun Central Senatorial district as a senator.

Speaking to Dr. Dayo Israel on Sunday, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Management at the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Obasanjo reflected on a principle of strict discipline that shaped his leadership style.

He recounted that, after leaving office as Head of State, his first daughter, Iyabo Obasanjo, who was studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, was engaged on his farm during her long vacation to gain practical experience.

On her first day, she arrived at the farm at 7:15 a.m., a quarter-hour past the agreed start time of 7:00 a.m.

Obasanjo, known for his discipline, promptly warned her, stressing that as his daughter, she needed to set a good example for other workers. He told her that any future tardiness would not be tolerated.

However, much to his disappointment, his daughter showed up late again the next day.

Without hesitation, Obasanjo sent her home, reinforcing the importance of punctuality and accountability in the workplace.

His action had a profound impact on his employees, as he explained: “If Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?” The story, Obasanjo pointed out, was a powerful example of leadership and discipline that applied to everyone, regardless of personal relationships.

Obasanjo’s message to Dr. Israel and his new leadership team was clear: “If you’re doing a job and you’re not stepping on toes, then you’re not effective.”

He encouraged them to embrace the challenges ahead and to be ready to make tough decisions for the success of their tenure.
