With about 13 months to the next General Elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has disclosed that registered voters now sum to 74 million and still counting.

The Electoral Commission also added that it has engaged the United Nations (UN) to work out measures that would ensure the success of the General Election. It said the collaboration was to ensure credible elections in 2019.

Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, speaking while receiving some UN delegates in Abuja on Monday said the UN has over the years been providing needed support to INEC in its bid to improve and sustain the country’s electoral system.

He said UN agencies such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have been of immense support to the Commission, especially in capacity building.

Professor Yakubu added that the UN delegation came at a time the Commission has completed and validated its strategic plan of action based on which it has developed the election project plan. He said the mission will also interact with other major stakeholders which include the National Assembly, security agencies as well as the Nigeria Police, being the lead agency for election security.

The UN mission was led by Serge Kubwimama, who is a member of the UN electoral assistance division said the team would engage relevant security agencies on how best to play their role during the elections.
