Northern APC governors kick against Lawan, insist on power shift

The thirteen governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the North have insisted that the party’s presidential flagbearer must come from the South.

After a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, the governors said power must rotate to the South for the sake of national interest.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong told journalists that Buhari has no anointed presidential candidate.

Lalong added that president directed the governors to meet with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to resolve the issue of a consensus candidate.

Bashir Ahmad, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, also confirmed the development in a tweet on Monday evening.

“After holding their last minute consultations with President Buhari, the APC northern governors disclosed that they are still supporting a power shift to the southern part of the country, Gov El-Rufai and Gov Lalung on behalf of the other governors,” he wrote.

The position of the Northern APC governors come moments after the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu announced Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate endorsed by the president.

The announcement has since generated mixed reactions within the party and beyond at a time the APC is preparing for its special convention to choose the presidential flagbearer.
