The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has released new directives outlining the proper procedure for the performance of Nigeria’s National Anthem and Pledge at official and national events.

In a public notice titled Correct Application of the National Anthem, the agency emphasized the importance of adhering to established national protocols to preserve the dignity and sanctity of Nigeria’s national symbols.

According to the NOA, only the first stanza of the National Anthem should be sung or recited at all official events. The third stanza, it added, should be rendered as the National Prayer at the beginning of such events.

The agency further clarified that the three stanzas of the anthem are to be sung or recited only on special national occasions such as Independence Day, Presidential Inauguration (Swearing-in), Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12), and the Inauguration of the National Assembly.

Additionally, the NOA stated that the National Pledge should be recited at the end of an event, urging all citizens and institutions to observe this order of protocol going forward.

Reiterating its commitment to promoting respect for national identity, the agency encouraged Nigerians to uphold the dignity and sanctity of our national symbols as part of efforts to build a people of positive values and national pride.
