NLC makes u-turn, calls off planned nationwide protest over fuel subsidy

In an interesting twist of events, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced its decision to suspend its planned nationwide protests scheduled for Thursday, January 27 and February 2.

According to The PUNCH, the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba made this known after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Tuesday.

Wabba disclosed that the decision to suspend the protests followed the reversal of the Federal Government’s plan to remove fuel subsidy.

BlackBox Nigeria had earlier reported that the NLC insisted it would go ahead with the protests.

However, the NLC president said its members who had been mobilised would be demobilised after the new decision of National Executive Council.

“The position of the government was also officially communicated to the Congress with calls for further engagement. Following the reversal and reapproach by the government, the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress met this morning virtually to consider the new position of the government.

“The NEC after vigorous debates took a decision to suspend the planned nationwide protest scheduled for January 27, 2022, and the national protest scheduled for February 2, 2022,” he said.

Wabba added that the congress has communicated the decision to its civil society allies who have stood behind Nigerian workers in their quest for social and economic justice.
