The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced a nationwide strike, set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024, citing the inability of the tripartite committee to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage.
Festus Osifo, President of the TUC, made the announcement during a press conference held in Abuja alongside NLC leadership on Friday.
This decision comes after the expiration of a prior request to the Federal Government to finalize all negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May.
Following the collapse of talks on the minimum wage within the tripartite committee, leading to an indefinite adjournment, organized labour issued a stern warning to the government.
Two weeks ago, the NLC and TUC leadership walked out on government representatives, denouncing their offer of a “paltry N48,000” for Nigerian workers.
Despite a subsequent increase by government representatives to N54,000, organized labour remains dissatisfied with the proposed amount.
