NIN registration portal suffers downtime

The registration portal for the National Identity Number (NIN) has crashed for over a week, BlackBox Nigeria reports.

A visit to the pre-enrolment website, https://penrol.nimc.gov.ng, shows that it has suffered server downtime, leaving many Nigerians hoping to enroll for their NIN stranded.

The reason for this techincal glitch, however, remains largely unknown. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is yet to officially confirm the difficulty in accessing its services as at time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time the website is reportedly down. In December 2020, it crashed due to huge traffic, following the rush by Nigerians to obtain their National Identity Number (NIN) in compliance with a directive by the Federal Government for citizens to link their NINs to their telecommunication SIM cards.

Later in an interview with Premium Times newspaper, the Director-General of the NIMC, Aliyu Aziz confirmed the development.

“We are aware that our website is down, but it is not our making, but so many people coming (to the website).

“We have never said we have the capacity to enrol people within a short period of time. This is because of the standard; a centre is just for 50,000 persons, so minimum we need 4,000 centres for 200 million people,” he said.
