Nigeria’s power grid collapses for fourth time in 2024

Nigeria’s power grid has once again collapsed for the fourth time in 2024, plunging the country into total darkness.

The Independent System Operator, a subsidiary of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), reported a sharp decline in power generation throughout the afternoon.

At around 2 pm, power generation dropped from an average of 3,417.99 MW to 2,797.16 MW. The situation worsened by 3 pm, with the electricity supply plummeting to 1,020.08 MW, before crashing to a mere 0.80 MW by 4 pm.

In response to the crisis, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) stated on their official platform, attributing the widespread power outage to a national grid system failure that occurred at 3:10 pm. The failure severely impacted the power supply across their franchise areas.

“We are actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders to expedite the restoration of electricity once the grid stabilizes,” the AEDC assured customers.
