Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed for the 12th time this year, adding to the country’s persistent power supply challenges.
According to a tweet from the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid, the latest failure occurred at around 2:09 PM on Wednesday. “The major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence,” the statement read.
The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos Disco) also confirmed the incident, stating that the grid collapse happened at about 1:33 PM. The company informed its customers of the resulting power outage and assured them that efforts were being made to restore supply.
“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy,” said Dr. Friday Elijah, Head of Corporate Communications at Jos Disco.
This marks the 12th grid collapse in 2024, with 11 recorded between January and November.
The repeated grid failures have sparked varied reactions online.
An X user, Olayemi, wrote, “This marks the 12th occurrence in the 12 calendar months of the year.”
Another user, OshomuvweA, asked, “Is there no lasting solution to this electrical problem?”
Wole Ogundare commented, “People need to do some research on what is called systemic distress. That’s what Nigeria is facing. All these band-aid measures (called reforms) across ALL sectors aren’t working, talk less of being sustainable.”
