The Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Judiciary, Luke Onofik has revealed that Ibrahim Tanko, the Chief Justice of the Federation earns N279,497 as monthly salary.

The lawmaker stated this on Wednesday, while moving a motion on the floor of the House on the need to increase the salary of the judicial officers.

Luke, a former speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, argued that meagre salaries paid to judicial officers will most likely expose them to corruption.

He added that the President of the Court of Appeal is paid N206,425 monthly.

He said, “Code of Conduct Tribunal Act restrains Judicial Officers from generally receiving gifts and operating private businesses except farming.”

The lawmaker stated that “poor renumeration of judicial officers is a serious threat to the Judiciary”

Subsequently, the House resolved to appeal to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review the renumeration of judicial officers with immediate effect, in line with present economic realities.
