Nigerian singer-songwriter Bukola Elemide, popularly known as Aṣa, has been selected as a 2025 Yale World Fellow.

This prestigious recognition places her among an elite group of global changemakers chosen by Yale University for an intensive leadership program.

The Yale World Fellows program, which began in 2002, selects only 16 individuals annually from thousands of applicants worldwide.

Aṣa, celebrated for her soulful music and thought-provoking lyrics, has continually shaped the African music landscape with hits like “Jailer,” “Fire on the Mountain,” and “Bibanke.”

Aṣa’s influence extends beyond music, as she has been a vocal advocate for social change, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment. Her selection as a Yale World Fellow cements her status as not just a musical icon but also a cultural ambassador and thought leader.

As a Yale World Fellow, Aṣa will participate in a four-month leadership residency alongside other distinguished professionals from various fields, including law, politics, environmental advocacy, and international development.

The program provides academic enrichment, mentorship, and networking opportunities, offering Fellows access to Yale’s vast resources and global thought leaders.

Reacting to the announcement, Emma Sky, Director of Yale’s International Leadership Centre, emphasized the significance of this year’s cohort, stating:

“In this era of global upheaval and uncertainty, the 2025 World Fellows are daring to envision and build an optimistic future. We are excited to welcome them to Yale.”

Aṣa’s selection as a Yale World Fellow has been hailed as a testament to her impact on Nigerian and African storytelling through music.

Her influence has resonated worldwide, making her a fitting candidate for such a transformative program. As she embarks on this new chapter, fans and admirers will be eager to see how this experience shapes her artistic and social advocacy work.
