The Nigerian Police has debunked reports of the torture and death of a 47-year-old suspect arrested in connection with robbery activities in Ibadan, Oyo state.
The deceased suspect is been alleged to have passed on while undergoing investigation by the members of the Inspector General of Police Special Tactical Squad, (IGPSTS) while in their custody at Itele area of Lafenwa, Ogun state.
According to an aggrieved member of the deceased, Adeshina Boyo, the suspect was labelled an ‘armed robber’ without facing fair court trial.
“My brother was called an armed robber, without being taken to the court. Nigerians should stand up against this injustice, he was actually murdered.
“My brother is not a thief, he was a community leader, everyone knows that.” Aadeshina said.
Another relative of the deceased, Funke Owoyemi, speaking with Blackboxnigeria said “when my brother was arrested, we did not know the station where he was taken to.
“We eventually got to know the officers that arrested him, one them gave us his number, but whenever we call, he never picks up, this made me suspicious about the whole sketchy situation.
“I went to Mokola, from there proceeded to Obada, still nobody knew the officer in question, a later on discovered my brother was at IGPSTS, Itele.
“We finally met with the commander at Itele, when I asked for my brother, she brought out 4 suspects and started interrogating them, asking them to confess the involvement of my brother in the crime.
“I still insisted on seeing my brother, and she replied ‘it was late’, adding that she was hospitalized when she received the news of my brother’s death.
“The commander went on to question me if knew my brother was a robber, which I denied, demanding for my brother’s corpse, necessary for a proper burial.”
Blackboxnigeria gathered that the deceased suspect, Olaoluwa, was initially used as a soft target to arrest other suspects who are in custody.
IGPSTS DSP Omosebi, stated that she was not in position talk, but can refer our correspondent to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba.
Adding that she was absent from the office when the suspect died.
When the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, was contacted, he said “ Bolarinwa, foundly called ‘Laolu’ was arrested on March 26, 2020, in Ekotedo Iya Olobe, Ibadan, along with his nephew, Oreoluwa Abiona over robbery cases and would have been charged to court if not for the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world.
“Laolu died in the hospital where he was admitted after noticing chronic illness, the doctors even confirmed he was an ulcer patient.
“The deceased’s family have the right to visit the hospital for confirmation, rather than lying the police killed their brother and denied them access to the corpse for proper burial.”
