Nigerian paralympic medalist is dead

Paul Kehinde, a world record-holder in the men’s 65kg para-powerlifting category, has died aged 33.

According to reports, he died on Thursday, after a brief illness.

Popularly called Olumi Agberin, Kehinde was also a former world number 1 Para-powerlifter, Olympic gold medalist and Commonwealth Games champion.

At the 2011 World Championship, he took the silver medal. He won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and at the 2015 All African Games where he set an African record of 214 kg.

He also won Gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, and broke the world record twice with lifts of 218kg and 220kg. With another world record lift of 220kg, he took gold at the Mexico World Championship.

In 2018, he clinched another gold medal at the FAZZA World Para-Powerlifting Championship with a record-breaking lift of 220kg. Kehinde also won silver at 2018 Commonwealth Games, Australia and Gold at the 2018 African Championship.
