The Nigerian government has played a role in the arrest of Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Canadian-Nigerian woman accused of threatening to poison members of the Yoruba and Benin community in Canada.
Toronto Police Service apprehended Sunnberger on September 1, 2024, following reports of hate-motivated threats posted online on August 25, 2024.
“Sonnberger was taken into custody on September 1, 2024, and has been charged with uttering threats. She is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 2, 2024, at the Ontario Court of Justice, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West,” stated the Toronto Police Service.
Reacting to the threats on August 28, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, confirmed the Nigerian government’s involvement, stating, “This is the picture of the lady behind the voice. Amaka Patience Sunnberger. She has deleted her TikTok account, and a group of Nigerians in Canada are reporting her officially to the relevant authorities in Canada.”
The incident gained attention following a viral video on X, where a woman, identified as Sunnberger, was heard making threatening remarks during a TikTok virtual meeting. In the video, she expressed intentions to poison food and water consumed by members of the Yoruba and Benin communities, citing alleged grievances against the Igbo community.
