Nigeria has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2nd African School Games, scheduled to take place in 2027.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Algiers, following a competitive bidding process where Nigeria triumphed over other strong contenders, including South Africa and Kenya.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), expressed his excitement and pride in Nigeria’s achievement.
“This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent. Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence,” he stated.
Olopade emphasized that the successful bid reflects the Renewed Hope Mandate, highlighting Nigeria’s resurgence as a hub for sports excellence in Africa.
He noted that the country is simultaneously growing its sports economy and enhancing its international image as a prime destination for global sporting events.
A statement signed by Mrs. Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press at the NSC, attributed Nigeria’s successful bid to its recent track record of hosting top-tier competitions.
Notably, Nigeria recently hosted the National Sports Festival and the 3rd Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships, events that were widely acclaimed for their exceptional organization, athlete experience, and facilities.
Olopade also commended the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for the confidence reposed in Nigeria, assuring that preparations will commence immediately to ensure the highest standards.
The Nigerian bidding delegation included Hon. Olopade and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel.
As Nigeria looks forward to hosting the 2nd African School Games in 2027, the nation aims to deliver an experience for young athletes from across the continent.
