The name on the lips of everyone in the last 24 hours has been no other than Anthony Joshua, the new world heavyweight champion.

Although his father is a Nigerian, Anthony fights for Britain.

Unknown to many, Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua didnt just start out as a British boxer.

BlackBox Nigeria has learnt that almost a decade ago, Anthony Joshua reached out to Nigeria who turned him down.

In 2008, 19-year-old Anthony with hopes of making it big on the global stage contacted Nigeria’s Boxing Federation for an opportunity to compete at the Beijing Olympics. He was however turned down for not reporting early for trials. That was the end of his boxing career with Nigeria.

However, 9 years after the unfortunate occurence, the Watford, London born boxer is the biggest name in the game following his knockout of highly rated Ukrainian, Wladimir Klitschko. He holds the IBF, WBA and IBO titles.
