Nigeria Launches Contactless Passport Renewal System in Europe

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a Contactless Passport Renewal System in Europe, allowing citizens to renew their passports online without visiting consular offices.

The initiative, announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, marks a significant step in the Tinubu administration’s modernization agenda, aligning with its vision to digitize government services and improve accessibity.

Following the successful rollout in Canada, the newly introduced system in Europe is designed to eliminate traditional hurdles associated with passport renewals, such as long waiting hours, travel costs, and bureaucratic delays.

“This initiative is not just about convenience; it is about bringing the services of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) directly to Nigerians, wherever they are,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

With this system, eligible Nigerians in Europe can now complete their passport renewal process entirely online, from their homes or offices, significantly reducing processing times and making services more efficient.

The launch of the contactless renewal system reflects the Nigerian government’s broader commitment to digital transformation.

The minister emphasized that this move aligns with global trends in technology-driven governance, ensuring that Nigeria remains at the forefront of modern service delivery.

Tunji-Ojo further highlighted the economic importance of the Nigerian diaspora, noting that their contributions are vital to the country’s development.

“Our citizens abroad play a crucial role in Nigeria’s growth. It is only right that they receive efficient and professional services that match global standards,” he said.
